Understanding Condemnations: Where The Numbers Come From & How to Make Them Lower

This session will delve into the origins of poultry condemnation numbers and provide strategies to reduce them.

Dr. Tom Inglis is the founder and managing partner at Poultry Health Services, a role he has held since establishing the company in 2002 to address the poultry industry's diagnostic needs in Alberta. Born in Saskatoon and raised in Vermilion and Edmonton, Tom earned his BSc in Agriculture from the University of Alberta in 1999. He then completed his DVM at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon in 2003 and became a board-certified poultry veterinarian with the American College of Poultry Veterinarians in 2009. Tom developed a fascination with poultry production and nutrition as a student at the University of Alberta where he continues to participate in the research program and is one of the flock health veterinarians for the Poultry Research Centre. As an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, he developed and delivered the original curriculum. Tom’s areas of focus in practice and research are integrated health programs, processing (stunning, food safety and humane handling), and effective disinfection. As an active member on a number of local, national and international associations, Tom works to contribute his training and passion for poultry as a resource for the betterment of the industry and profession.

2024 Poultry Disease Update for Eastern Canada

Dr. Novy will provide an update on the latest poultry diseases affecting Eastern Canada.

Understanding poultry health and sharing that information is Dr. Novy’s specialty. At Guelph Poultry Veterinary Services, she works closely with many producers, observing the challenges firsthand and dedicating herself to improving flock health. After earning her DVM from the University of Guelph, Dr. Novy began working in the poultry industry to promote healthy flock production practices. She has focused on coaching and mentoring producers to achieve continual improvement in their operations.

2024 Poultry Disease Update for Western Canada

Dr. Rahmani will present the latest updates on poultry diseases in Western Canada.

I am a poultry veterinarian with over 10 years of experience in the poultry industry, six of which have been in Canada. I graduated with my DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) degree from the University of Tehran, Iran. I completed a four-year residency/PhD program in avian medicine in 2012 and have published several papers on salmonella and antimicrobial resistance in collaboration with WHO collaborating centre for antimicrobial resistance in Denmark. I moved to Canada in 2014, and earned my Master’s degree in poultry nutrition from the University of Manitoba in 2017. I worked for 5 years as a technical service veterinarian at Abbotsford Veterinary Clinic in BC, during which time I engaged directly with clients and farm owners in the region. In 2023, I became certified by the American College of Poultry Veterinarians and have since been practicing as a fully licensed poultry veterinarian, with a focus on disease prevention and control, management, industry education and research, responsible use of antimicrobials in poultry and finding antimicrobial alternatives.

Ken Semon is a seasoned expert with 39 years in the poultry industry. After earning a BSc in Animal Science from Rutgers University in 1982, he began his career at Arbor Acres in CT, where he advanced from production and hatchery management to Sales & Technical Service Manager for South Asia by 1992. His international experience includes a significant role as Production Manager in Malaysia. Joining Cobb-Vantress in 2001, Ken became Director of Technical Service for North America in 2003, overseeing technical support across the US, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. By 2017, he was appointed Sr. Director of Technical Service, managing the North American tech team and supporting global customers. Since 2020, Ken has been with Aviagen as Technical Service Manager, focusing on sales and technical support in the US South and West regions, including AR, LA, CA, CO, IN, and VA..

Dr. Steven Clark joined Huvepharma as Veterinary Technical Service Manager for Turkey on March 30, 2020. With extensive experience in the poultry industry, Dr. Clark brings a wealth of knowledge, particularly in turkey health, to his new role. His career includes roles at Hoffmann-La Roche, Alpharma, Pfizer/Zoetis, and most recently, Devenish Nutrition, LLC, where he served as a poultry technical service manager and consulting veterinarian. Dr. Clark's expertise encompasses coccidiosis, blackhead, NAE/ABF systems, and turkey health trends. He resides in West Jefferson, North Carolina, with his wife of 33 years.

Light Flicker & Impact on Poultry

Dr. Schwean-Lardner will discuss the effects of light flicker on poultry health and production.

Karen Schwean-Lardner completed her PhD in poultry management and welfare from the University of Saskatchewan, studying the impact of lighting programs on broiler welfare and production. This work was conducted in conjunction with Aviagen Broilers, and their lighting program recommendations internationally are based on these works. She has continued a strong research portfolio in the area of both turkey, broiler and pullet lighting programs, with emphasis on both welfare and productivity. Karen maintains a strong extension portfolio and has given approximately 130 invited international scientific or industry presentations since joining the University of Saskatchewan Canada faculty 10 years ago. She also serves on many welfare advisory committees for both turkey and broiler groups internationally.
